Q&A
How did you get your start in the yachting industry?
I started as Donald Starkey ‘s Personal Assistant PA 1989. Within 6 months, I was converted, I wanted to be a yacht designer and I worked very hard toward that goal. Within two years I became a senior designer in Starkey’s studio and in 1993 I was running his design studio and his team.
Which project or accomplishment do you consider to be the most significant in your career?
It was quite an accomplishment getting the 134m Serene project. There are so many moments to reflect on, but another big moment was watching 92m Lady Lara come out of her shed at Lürssen.
What is your biggest challenge?
Pleasing all my clients at the same time

It would have to be Japan because it is so beautiful and so different to our way of living.
What is your favorite part of your job? Why?
Designing and seeing the final product
Who has influenced you the most? Why?
Terence Disdale . He can do every aspect of yacht design from exterior to interior and to the final selection of finishes and fabric. He has great sensitivity in his approach to design
What is the most effective daily habit you possess?
I am a list maker. I make my list before starting the day, so that no time is wasted
Where do you find inspiration? Why?
I find inspiration in every product— cars, shoes, handbags etc.
What advice do you have for the next generation?
Never pretend to know everything, be hungry for knowledge. Never stop learning
How do you manage a balance in life?
Life and work is the same for me… and I make sure that I really both!
Where are you the happiest?
I am happiest by the sea in my beach hut in the south of France.
What is the greatest piece of advice you’ve gotten?
Never make too many firm plans in your life, then you won’t get let down by disappointments. Be positive and leave some space for surprises.
What does it mean to you to be an ISS judge?
I am very proud to have been selected and it is really interesting to have such comprehensive information on all the latest yachts coming out of the shipyards.
What do you like about the ISS Design & Awards Gala?
I appreciate the large spectrum of yacht knowledge among the judges. I like that the event is totally independent and not linked to any advertising and magazine. The event itself is very elegant and the food is always fantastic.
